Bio
Joshua Katz entered the legal profession after a successful career in teaching and after service as an elected official. He is also a Paramedic, and served as Chief of EMS for the Town of Hempstead Department of Parks and Recreation.
After law school, he clerked for Justice Clint Bolick (Arizona Supreme Court), Judge Victor Wolski (Court of Federal Claims), and Circuit Judge Paul Matey (Third Circuit). He then joined the law firm of Schlichter Bogard (at the time, the third name was Denton). There, he represented classes of workers injured by their employer’s treatment of their retirement plans and choice of 401k menu. He also represented classes injured through invasion of their data privacy.
After a stint at the Cato Institute, where he wrote several amicus briefs and conducted research on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, he joined the Arizona Solicitor General’s Office doing Special Litigation. Since January 20, thishas given him the opportunity to work on cutting-edge affirmative federal litigation, in addition to the usual work of constitutional litigation and appeals, high-profile complex civil litigation, and government accountability investigations.
His determination to fight is grounded, in part, in his participation in his faith community. At Beth El Phoenix, a Conservative Jewish synagouge, he teaches a Bible study course each year. This year, he is studying the Song of Songs, Ruth, and Ecclesiastes with his students. He also regularly reads Torah and chants prophetic readings, as well as leading services on occasion.
He is particularly proud of having combined his interests by putting on a program at the synagouge about civic engagement and protecting democracy. The program, which featured speakers Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer and Arizona Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick, was well-received. More importantly, it reinforced for that community the bedrock values of liberal democracy.
